Bringing the IB Continuum Together
A perfect instance of a good learning process that was fostered by an IB curriculum is the Festival of Learning at Rivercrest Christian College. Rather than highlighting every stage of learning individually, the school held the entire IB continuum program comprising of the Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP), and Diploma Program (DP).
Some of the milestone projects exhibited during this occasion include the PYP Exhibition where the little learners tackle some of the existing problems in the world inquiringly and creatively; Personal Project where the MYP learners conduct individual research on topics that align with their interests and passions; and lastly the core project involving DP learners’ reflections on the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
By holding all these projects in one place, the school made it easy for the parents to appreciate the progression of the learners’ growth as a result of the IB education curriculum. The festival gave the community an insight on the kind of skills learned under the IB education program namely critical thinking, communication, and global awareness among others.
Encouraging Inquiry, Independence, and Student Voice
An important characteristic of the Festival of Learning was the high level of student empowerment and agency. Students were not just presenting their products; they also explained their ideas, research, and personal development. Besides the academic performance of the learners, there were other benefits that came with the Festival of Learning as the program created an avenue through which the school could be bonded in various ways. There was the coming together of the school management, learners, parents, and other outside educators in celebration of education and achievement of excellence.
A significant aspect of the festival was that it created room for learners from various year levels to connect in some way. The younger learners got motivated to study harder and work towards achieving the success witnessed in the senior learners who, in turn, felt proud and happy being mentors of the young ones.
Another thing that stood out during the Festival of Learning was that it changed the perception of various aspects of IB courses including the core subjects. As the Core components were thought to just be additional courses meant to make life difficult for DP learners, they ended up showing the opposite in their reflections.

Through the public presentation of the academic prowess of its students, Rivercrest ensures that the appreciation of learning goes beyond words; rather, it becomes tangible and recognizable. This practice helps enhance the self-confidence of students as well as foster stronger school-community relationships.
